Many of us interact with cars, buses, trucks daily. Children ride buses to and from school. We drive to and from work or for errands. Trucks deliver products to factories, stores, and direct to our homes. (In fact, I’m tracking an important package that started in Colorado yesterday afternoon, flew to Tennessee and is scheduled to be at my door tomorrow afternoon.) How does that get done safely and efficiently? I find that fascinating and important.
Drivers are passing the extended stop arms on school busses, putting children at risk. Drivers are in a hurry and speed through red lights putting others at risk. Runners and walkers are often unseen by motorists. People are distracted and end up rear-ending other vehicles. Drivers can be under the influence of substances or just plain tired. Trying to make sure I hit the big arrow on the entertainment screen to start the podcast I want to listen to is a distraction that takes my eyes and attention off the traffic situation.
Solving these issues is why I continue to be thrilled to lead the Transportation Safety Equipment Institute (www.TSEI.org). We work to enhance safety of ground vehicles through government/industry collaboration and advancement of lighting, reflective, audio, and video/vision technologies that include ultrasonics, cameras, radar, and lidar.
Our spring meeting is April 7-9 at the headquarters of Daimler Truck North America. We have arranged a tour of the truck assembly plant for Western Star and the Freightliner eCascadia. Daimler personnel will cover a variety of topics and there will be a fleet panel to discuss what works and does not work for them.
There is a more complete agenda and a link to registration on the webpage. We need registration soon to plan for security requirements and refreshments and meals. So, please, register soon.
If you are local to the Portland metro area, and would like to participate, check with me via email or voicemail and we can discuss a reduced fee. PaulMenig@TSEI.org, PaulMenig@BusinessAccelerants.com, 971.222.5683
This is a great opportunity to see some of the best manufacturing and test processes in the trucking industry. Don’t miss out.
